TroutSouth is an award-winning quarterly
journal published in Andersonville, Tennessee, just minutes from
the Clinch River tailwater. It documents and details not only
trout angling destinations around the South, but also fly
patterns, angling techniques, research, new management
strategies, trends, personalities and politics of the southern
trout scene.
TROUTSOUTH: HISTORY/PHILOSOPHY
TroutSouth was founded in 1995 as a number of factors
converged to create a need for a regular, reliable source of
information about the growing coldwater resource in the region, a
source of information devoted to the startling concept that the
South is no longer just a place for trout angling's unfortunates
to while away unproductive days between trips elsewhere. First
and foremost, TroutSouth recognizes the differences between trout
habitat in the South and trout habitat in the West and Northeast
and its implications for management. TroutSouth also recognizes
that tailwater environmental improvements -- primarily in the
areas of minimum water flows and dissolved oxygen -- are creating
the kind of "big water/big fish" opportunities
heretofore unknown in the region. TroutSouth recognizes the need
to document and explore the region's increasing diversity of
angling experiences -- from big tailwater fisheries to wild
mountain trout, from stocked streams managed under a range of
imaginative regulations to the growing number of private waters
managed for large trout. TroutSouth also recognizes the
year-round angling opportunities available here that aren't
available elsewhere.
THE RESULTS
TroutSouth has quickly become the #1
source of regular information on southern trout angling. The
journal took first place honors in prestigious Southeastern
Outdoor Press Association competition in 1996 and has steadily
gained acceptance among anglers and biologists for its depth and
breadth of coverage. Readers, for instance, were the first to
know about the discovery of 16 brook trout streams in Tennessee
and another 16 in the North Carolina and Georgia portions of the
Hiwassee River watershed. They were the first to know of the
discovery of whirling disease in Virginia wild trout. They've
learned to tie the Crow Fly, the Yellarhammer and the Little
River Ant. And in reader-friendly fashion they've plumbed the
depths of southern trout biology. Simply put, subscribers find
information in TroutSouth they find NOWHERE else. We cover every
riffle, run, pool and undercut of the southern trout fishing
experience -- and ONLY the southern trout fishing experience.
